Since the latter part of the 19th century there has been systematic study of it and many classifications have been proposed: introversion-extraversion (Jung), objective-subjection (Stern), etc. Classification according to "type" is a way of describing the differences between persons, but "types" are difficult to prove or disprove. Ernest says, "Look, Frank, today's topic is all about personality types. What type are you?" Frank says, "I am an insomniac-agnostic-egotist..." Frank says, "...I lie awake nights trying to figure out whether or not I believe that I am as great as I am."
Or the newer one about the insomniac, agnostic egotist, who lies awake nights wondering whether he believes that he is as great as he thinks he is.
